Are you good at remembering names? What about faces? As a professional illusionist, I travel around the world doing shows for thousands of people. I meet lots of amazing people – people like you. But I have one small problem: I have prosopagnosia – facial blindness. This means I can’t remember what people look like! Most people forget names, but I forget names AND faces. Crazy, isn’t it? Facial blindness makes it very difficult for me to make lasting connections. But connecting isn’t hard only for me. It’s often difficult for each of us because we are all so BUSY. But what would happen if we took just 5 minutes to talk to that new stranger or listen to their story? This is my story… something beyond a simple illusion. (PAGE 1)

My story is like some of yours. I was raised in the church. I knew all the church answers and made decent life choices. But one day, I just stopped believing. I decided God was just another name in the list of imaginary characters from my past. I grew up. Not long after that, I started considering what it meant if God didn’t exist. The implications were staggering! After a brief period of non-belief, I realized I didn’t have enough faith to continue as a nonbeliever. I just couldn’t make the unwarranted leap with all the scientific, logical, historical, literary, and philosophical reasons for God’s existence staring me in the face. I just knew too much about it. One thing I discovered is that many people, after spending a few minutes doing “research” on Google, feel confident in their position, whatever that may be. Isn’t it funny how the people who know the least are often the ones who argue the loudest? (PAGE 2)

The famed poet Alexander Pope said, “A little learning is a dangerous thing.”[1] Philosopher Francis Bacon said, “A little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism; but depth in philosophy bringeth men’s minds about to religion.”[2] Wow! Most people already believe God exists. Pew Research recently found that 90% of US adults believed in some sort of higher power.[3] So the problem isn’t belief. The problem is that they don’t know how to connect with God on a personal level. And that’s what I was missing. I knew all about God, but I needed to connect with Him personally. We need both – the knowledge and the connection. What are some things we need to know about God? From historical documents, we know that Jesus Christ lived around 2000 years ago and was crucified on a Roman cross.[4] It was a terrible way to die. The Bible tells us Jesus lived a perfect life and never sinned. If he never broke the law, then why was he killed? Powerful religious and political leaders spread lies about Jesus because Jesus claimed to be God. Jesus said, I and my Father are one. (Jn 10:30) Perhaps you are familiar with the story of Jesus. If so, you know Jesus didn’t stay in the grave: he rose again 3 days later! (PAGE 3)

You see, Jesus went to the cross on purpose. When he did that, he took the sins of the whole world on himself and paid for them by his death. And when he rose, it proved again he was who he claimed to be – God in flesh. The Bible says, All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). That simply means we don’t measure up to God’s standard of perfection. The payment for sin is death (Rom 6:23). If we die without Christ, we are forever separated from God. We are judged for our sin against God and will spend eternity in hell. But that’s not what God desires for us. The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom 6:23b). Sin MUST be punished – and that’s why Jesus came! He took the punishment on himself so that we wouldn’t have to live apart from God in this life or in the next. God proved His love for us, because even though we are the ones who sinned, Jesus died in our place (Rom 5:8). Jesus wants to connect with us. He wants to forgive our sin. For anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Rom 10:13) He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. (Rom 4:25) That means Jesus’ death and resurrection are the legal means whereby God can declare a guilty sinner to be righteous. (PAGE 4)

These are things you need to know about God. But how can we connect with God? And what happens when we do connect with Him? Yes, we receive eternal life in Heaven, but we also receive eternal life starting right now! Listen to Jesus’ prayer and how he describes eternal life: Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. (John 17:3) Believing things about God isn’t enough. The devil knows about God, but he doesn’t want a personal connection with the Savior. So if you’d like to turn from your sin and give your life to following Jesus, you can connect with God by praying something like this: God, I’m sorry I’ve broken your law. I’ve sinned. Please forgive me. I believe Jesus died in my place and rose again. Please rescue me from sin, death, and hell. Starting now, I want to connect with You and follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen. (PAGE 5)

Praying a prayer of faith like this is just the first step in following Jesus. It’s the initial connection. If you prayed that prayer, be sure to let someone know! You can reach out to the individual or church listed below and tell them your story. And if you still have questions, please feel free to ask. Following Jesus has been the greatest decision I’ve ever made. It’s worth it. Now be sure to read your Bible so you can learn how to follow Jesus daily and deepen your connection with Him! I would recommend starting with the gospel of John.
